Product Spotlight - MiniMod Small Modular Buoy

DeepWater Buoyancy is one of the world’s premier producers of subsea buoyancy products. Its portfolio of products includes standard and custom solutions for all subsea markets including ocean science, offshore energy, and military.

This month’s product spotlight focuses on DeepWater Buoyancy’s Instrument Bottom Mounts. The line of BTM-AL50 bottom mounts is designed for ADCP deployment in shallow ocean waters, rivers, coastal areas, and anywhere else where the size and remote recoverability of the AL-200 and AL-500 TRBM are not required.

Purpose-Built for Stability and Versatility

Our BTM-AL50 Instrument Bottom Mounts are designed to provide a stable platform for deploying ADCPs, current meters, and other oceanographic instruments directly on the seabed. Whether you’re working in shallow coastal waters or lakes, these mounts offer the durability and performance needed for long-term deployments.

Each Bottom Mount is constructed from high-strength, corrosion-resistant materials and is designed for ease of customization. From single-instrument setups to complex multi-sensor arrays, our mounts can be tailored to meet your specific project requirements.

Key Features

  • Robust Construction – Built with marine-grade aluminum for long-term durability in harsh subsea environments.
  • Flexible Design – Easily adaptable to accommodate a variety of instruments and deployment scenarios.
  • 2-axis Gimbal – Precision-machined gimbal ensures ADCPs are held securely and aligned properly.
  • Counterweights – Optional counterweight system available for lighter instruments
  • Deployment Flexibility – Compatible with diver deployment, ROV handling, or over-the-side operations.
  • Recovery Options – Originally designed to be recovered by divers, the units can be outfitted with our Pop-Up Buoy Recovery Systems

A and B

The Instrument Bottom Mounts come in two varieties.

BTM-AL50-A

This traditional welded unit can be deployed by diver or lowered to the seafloor by line from small vessels. Instrumentation is easily accessible for battery change out or maintenance.

BTM-AL50-B

Like the traditional unit in all other ways, this robust bottom mount is collapsible for ease of transportation and lower shipping costs. The pinned and bolted design makes for a quick and easy assembly.

New Brace for Collapsible Bottom Mount

The collapsible version of the bottom mount, the BTM-AL50-B, has a number of unique benefits including ease of handling and transportation.  It also allows users to deploy from smaller vessels.

Recently, we found that users were utilizing these units for applications where their greater payload would have been better suited for the welded version, the BTM-AL50-A.  Our designers went to work and produced a field retrofittable and installable brace kit.  Once installed, the brace increases the rigidity of the assembly rivaling the welded design.

What is the Oceantic Network?

At the Oceantic Network (formerly the Business Network for Offshore Wind), our driving purpose is to inform, coordinate, and mobilize human ingenuity, enterprise, and labor to take advantage of the urgent need to tap the vast renewable energy resources that lie offshore in the world’s oceans. The collective, coordinated efforts of our members equip communities and nations to accelerate the transition to clean energy and create economic opportunities.

Over the past ten years, the Network has grown along with the industry, changing its name to expand and include industry sectors. At its ten-year mark, the Network continues to look forward and set the pace for the industry; that includes an expanded view of what offshore wind can provide the energy mix. Offshore wind is the gateway to other ocean renewables, including green hydrogen, wave energy, and more. Offshore wind as an industry will remain the main focus of the Network; however we are expanding our scope to grow and adapt as the industry does the same. With this enlarged focus, the Network changed its name from the Business Network for Offshore Wind to the Oceantic Network.

Sidney “Dave” Cook

December 11, 1935  –  January 15, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and mentor Sidney Cook.

Many people in the subsea industry will remember him as Dave Cook, the founder of Flotation Technologies, and a pioneer in the development and use of syntactic foam for subsea buoyancy.

Electric Boat

In his early career, Dave worked at General Dynamics’ Electric Boat.  While working there, Dave and his team studied ways to salvage sunken submarines. They proposed using a novel material called syntactic foam, a specialty composite made from hollow glass microspheres and epoxy resin systems. The Navy ultimately didn’t want it, however it turned out the oil company ESSO did. They contracted Electric Boat to have Dave build the world’s first drill riser buoyancy modules for use in offsetting the weight of subsea drilling equipment.

Electric Boat opted not to be in the oil business, so Dave partnered up with a company in Massachusetts called Data Packaging. That company had been producing injection-molded hollow plastic spheres that were used as additional buoyancy in the drilling riser project. After a short period of time producing material at Data Packaging, there was an oil spill in Santa Barbara.  The drilling in California came to a halt and with it, drill riser buoyancy. Data Packaging and Dave were out and Dave was onto the next project.

New Ventures

Dave would go on to work with Emerson and Cuming in Massachusetts and continue building drill risers, but that relationship was short lived. Dave joined up with a company in Maine called Shape, Inc. The owner Tony Gelardi had been at Data Packaging and started his own injection molding business. Dave went to work with Shape making drill riser buoyancy and other syntactic foam products that were beginning to be used in oceanographic work.

In 1979 Dave founded his own company Flotation Products, which would later become Flotation Technologies.  Dave built his business with his family, growing it from a 3-person team making products in their barn to a company that, at its peak, employed well over 100 people.

In 2008 the Cook family sold Flotation Technologies and Dave retired.  In 2013, DeepWater Buoyancy spun out of that company to continue the tradition of supplying subsea buoyancy to the world from the same small town of Biddeford, Maine. Dave and his family remained close to today’s DeepWater Buoyancy management and team.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Dave often commented on how blessed he was and how so many people helped him over the years. This is exactly how we feel when we think of Dave and the Cook family. Without perseverance, luck and the Cook family, our company would not exist.

Dave will be missed by all who knew him. He was a man that changed the world in so many ways.

Collaboration

For the second consecutive year, DeepWater Buoyancy has collaborated with Professor Tove Rasmussen and her Global Marketing class at the University of New England (UNE).

Three groups of students were assigned the task of acting as DeepWater Buoyancy to develop market entry strategies for Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. Using key themes from their coursework, the groups were challenged to create comprehensive go-to-market plans for each country.

Campus Visit

In October, students visited DeepWater Buoyancy to tour the facility and meet with the team of Sales Manager, Dan Cote and Sales Engineer, Jordan Tremblay to learn about the company.

Tove invited the sales team on-site at UNE for their end of semester final presentation in December.

This project holds special significance for Sales Engineer Mike Nicholas, a proud UNE alum, who relished the chance to engage with his alma mater and contribute to the learning experience of the next generation of working professionals.

UNE Global Marketing Team Photo
The DeepWater Buoyancy Sales Team with Team Chile

Team Chile

The team of Jayden Thornton, Zach Federico and Jimmy Hulland found Chile’s diverse marine landscape requiring robust solutions, and that DeepWater Buoyancy is more than equipped to meet these needs. From the calm waters of the coastline to the challenging conditions offshore, their expertise positions them as a key partner for unlocking the potential of Chile’s marine research sector.

It’s their opinion this would be best achieved by developing a multifaceted marketing strategy with competitive pricing, multiple distribution channels and promotional events. Our products are tailor-made for Chile’s unique marine environments, supporting local institutions in their mission to advance marine science and protect the ocean.

Team Chile Photo

Team Mexico

The team of Anthony Sciucco, Shea Courtmanche, Zach Benner and Tommy Mcguire outlined a strategy for DeepWater Buoyancy to enter the Mexican market. Placing an emphasis on exporting as the preferred approach due to its lower costs, lower risk, and easier regulatory compliance compared to establishing a wholly owned subsidiary. The focus is on providing products to meet Mexico’s growing needs in sustainable ocean management, disaster preparedness, and climate change monitoring. The Mexican government’s commitment to infrastructure development and sustainable ocean economies presents a favorable environment for DeepWater Buoyancy’s products.

Targeting oil and gas companies could prove to be extremely profitable. That market has an estimated $185 billion value and over 993 companies operating in Mexico. The presentation highlights product customization, quality, and longevity, with personal selling identified as the optimal promotion method to build strong client relationships and fully tailor products to customer needs.

Team Mexico Photo
A slide from Team Mexico’s presentation on the market.

Team Brazil

Brazil’s booming offshore oil and gas industry is the target of this team, with plans to provide tailored products like subsea floats for deep-water projects. The team of Tyler Richards, Nick Yohn, Isaiah Mojica and Jakob Rivers’ strategy includes forming partnerships with local companies and investing in Brazilian manufacturing to meet the demand for reliable, high-performance solutions in harsh environments. By positioning themselves as a premium provider, they aim to become a key player in Brazil’s offshore oil operations.

To succeed, DeepWater Buoyancy would offer customized, low-maintenance products and set up local service centers for faster support. Their value-based pricing highlights the importance of efficiency and reduced risk in the oil and gas sector. They plan to focus on exports to increase production and profits, while building strong industry ties through the Energy Industries Council.

Summary

In conclusion, DeepWater Buoyancy’s continued partnership with Professor Tove Rasmussen and the University of New England’s Global Marketing class has once again proven to be a fruitful collaboration. The students demonstrated a deep understanding of global marketing principles by crafting innovative, country-specific strategies for Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. Their recommendations, ranging from multifaceted marketing approaches in Chile to export-driven strategies in Mexico, and high demand Oil & Gas market in Brazil showcase the potential for DeepWater Buoyancy to expand its reach. This collaboration not only provided valuable insights for the company but also offered students a real-world platform to apply their academic knowledge.

StableMoor Mooring Buoy in Bay of Fundy with Ocean Tracking Network Cover

For the next installment in our series of technical articles, we look at the use of StableMoor® Mooring Buoys in a recent project by Ocean Tracking Network in the Bay of Fundy.

Project Summary

DeepWater Buoyancy and DASCO Equipment Inc. partnered with the Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) to execute a major upgrade to their mooring platform for monitoring equipment in the Bay of Fundy.

OTN, in partnership with Dalhousie University, has established an acoustic system to track aquatic animals in the Bay of Fundy. Specifically, the project aims to track the effects of tidal power installations in the upper Minas passage on the local marine environment and wildlife.

Mooring Equipment Challenges in the Bay of Fundy

The Bay of Fundy is one of the world’s most dynamic bodies of water, due to its strong tidal currents. This makes it an ideal location for tidal power projects, but challenging for moorings.

In 2010 OTN deployed a series of single point moorings with fish tracking technology. Over the next decade, the project faced numerous failures related to the mooring design such as equipment breakage, destruction of the mooring hardware leading to washups, and occasional entanglement with fishing gear. Additionally, the mooring required service every six months.

In 2023 OTN partnered with DeepWater Buoyancy and DASCO Equipment to redesign the mooring platform to reduce equipment issues and frequent servicing. A major component of that redesign included the use of a custom-built version of DeepWater Buoyancy’s StableMoor® Mooring Buoy.

The moorings capitalized on the low coefficient of drag inherent in the StableMoor® design, as well as the robustness of the syntactic foam.  Durable and corrosion-resistant stainless steel chains and shackles were utilized, and the bushings and plates updated to ensure functionality in the Bay of Fundy’s extremely dynamic tidal flow.

The mooring design changes significantly improved the performance and dramatically decreased the number of mooring failures.

Weathering the Bay of Fundy with Custom StableMoor® Buoys

Specifically engineered for high current applications, the StableMoor® is designed to reduce drag and increase mooring stability in extreme flow regimes. By decreasing frontal area (compared to spherical buoys) and increasing dynamic stability in high current areas, the StableMoor® minimizes mooring inclination and excursions. The StableMoor® Mooring Buoy is the lowest drag instrument platform available on the market today.

DeepWater Buoyancy Small StableMoor® Buoys for Ocean Tracking Network

To meet OTN’s specific needs for the Bay of Fundy monitoring project, DeepWater Buoyancy’s engineers created a smaller version of the design with custom instrument wells and hardware.  To account for changes in current direction without excessive wear, 316L stainless steel mooring swivels were chosen. The stainless steel material also provides crucial durability in highly corrosive seawater.

DeepWater Buoyancy looks forward to working with OTN and DASCO to modify and perfect the monitoring platform.

What’s Next?

In 2024 another round of improvements is planned. One of the goals of the exercise is to extend the mooring’s battery life to one year, thus reducing service frequency.  The plans will also investigate equipment to allow retrieval of the anchors, which are currently left on the seafloor when the moorings are recovered.

“DeepWater Buoyancy is excited to work with our long-term partners, DASCO and the team at the Ocean Tracking Network on such important work.”, said Dan Cote, Sales Manager.

What the Ocean Tracking Network Does

Headquartered at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S., OTN has established an acoustic system to track aquatic animals in the Bay of Fundy. Specifically, the project aims to track the effects of tidal power installations in the upper Minas Passage on the local marine environment and wildlife.

OTN is a science, data management and partnership platform that supports research collaborations in freshwater and ocean locations across the globe. In the Bay of Fundy, OTN and its collaborators have been an integral part of monitoring fish-turbine interactions near OpenHydro turbines.

Using specialized equipment, they monitor the movements, behaviors, and environmental preferences of fish and other aquatic species. Knowledge generated through OTN collaborations is used by scientists, managers, policymakers, industry, and Indigenous and coastal communities to conserve and manage shared resources.
